We’re pleased to announce the second webinar in our series on issues in biomedical research training, workforce development, and diversity. The series is a combination of lectures, panel discussions, and workshops focused on a variety of important topics for the broader training community, such as program evaluation, mentoring, safe and inclusive research environments, and curricular development.

We’re offering another round of administrative supplements to provide summer research experiences to undergraduate students. The research experiences can be conducted remotely or in person, depending on the institutional regulations of the applicant organization. The supplements are open to all NIGMS-funded investigators with active R01, R35, and R37 awards, including those in their final year of funding. We’ll accept requests under PA-20-272, Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements.

We’re recruiting for a position in the Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences (PPS) Branch of the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry (PPBC). Scientific responsibilities of the position include any or all of the following research subjects, depending on the applicant’s experience: cellular signaling, drug-receptor interactions, drug metabolism and transport, drug delivery, and wound healing. The successful hire will be responsible for management of a portfolio of research grants and research training and/or career development awards, and will collaboratively stimulate, plan, advise, and direct program activities related to their field of expertise.

The successful applicants will be responsible for scientific and administrative management of a portfolio of research grants and/or research training and career development awards, and will stimulate, plan, advise, direct, and evaluate program activities related to their field of expertise.

The DRCB position involves overseeing grants supporting research and providing resources for research infrastructure enhancement and capacity building in the basic, translational, and clinical biomedical sciences. The chosen candidate will manage Institutional Development Award​ and Native American Research Centers for Health programs, and may contribute to other programmatic activities as opportunities and needs emerge. We’re pleased to announce a new notice of special interest (NOSI) (NOT-GM-23-015) addressing the urgent need for cost reduction of the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) data storage and utilization.

The SRA, hosted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), contains a broad collection of raw DNA and RNA sequencing data that continues to grow exponentially. In an effort to reduce the cost and identify efficient solutions for SRA data, NIGMS has partnered with NLM and NIH’s Office of Data Science Strategy to support research on ways to optimize SRA data compression and representation.

To continue our efforts to modernize biomedical research training and career development, we invite eligible institutions with NIGMS training (T32, T34), certain research education (R25), or institutional career development (K12) awards to apply for administrative supplements to develop and implement curricular, training, or administrative activities to enhance:

I’m pleased to announce the selection of Shawn Drew Gaillard, Ph.D., as the new director of our Division of Genetics and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (GMCDB). Shawn has been the acting director of the Division since February 2022. She will begin in this new role on January 15.

Shawn joined GMCDB as chief of the Developmental and Cellular Processes Branch in 2019, overseeing grants focused on organismal response to environmental stressors. Prior to this role, she was the research training officer at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and before that, she was a program director in our Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity and former Division of Genetics and Developmental Biology. Her experience also includes serving as a science education fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and directing what is now the NIH Academy on Health Disparities.

I’m pleased to announce that the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) Phase 2 funding opportunity announcement (FOA) (PAR-23-063) has been reissued. The COBRE program supports the establishment and development of innovative biomedical and behavioral research centers at Institutional Development Award (IDeA)-eligible institutions. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen successful Phase 1 centers through further research infrastructure improvements and continued development of investigators with shared scientific interests who can compete effectively for independent research funding.
