We’re seeking a highly qualified scientist to serve as a branch chief in our Division for Research Capacity Building (DRCB). This is a newly created position for the Division as it reorganizes into three branches. Applicants should have significant interest in the programs managed by the Division, which seek to build capacity for conducting basic, clinical, behavioral, and translational research that fall in the mission areas of NIH. These include the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program, which supports research, research workforce development, and research infrastructure improvements in states where levels of NIH research funding have historically been low; the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) program; the Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) program; and the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program. A DRCB branch chief’s responsibilities include scientific and administrative planning for grant awards, developing notices of funding opportunities, overseeing grant portfolio activities for the branch’s program directors, and managing and evaluating activities of the branch. Additionally, the branch chief will manage an assigned grant portfolio and will work closely with other branch chiefs in DRCB and the Division director.

The ideal candidate will have strong interest in research capacity building and familiarity with the management of large program projects, particularly clinical research. Experience as an NIH scientific grant administrator is a plus, and outstanding written and oral communication skills are essential. Candidates should have strong interest in supervising and mentoring a team of program directors, and in serving as a leader within the branch, the Division, and the Institute.
