Archived: Funding Opportunity: Support of Competitive Research (SC1, SC2, SC3) Awards

The Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) program strives to increase the research competitiveness of faculty at institutions with a historical mission or demonstrated track record of training and graduating students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research (see NIH’s Notice of Interest in Diversity). Funding opportunity announcements for the three SCORE mechanisms were just reissued:

SCORE Research Advancement Award (SC1)
PAR-20-039
The SC1 mechanism is for established investigators who can demonstrate a need to augment their research skills (e.g., quality/quantity of preliminary data) and productivity (e.g., publications) to transition to non-SCORE support.

SCORE Pilot Project Award (SC2)
PAR-20-040
The SC2 mechanism is for early-career investigators who are applying for their first non-fellowship research award to test a new idea or generate preliminary data. This award requires guidance from productive, established, and well-funded U.S. scientist(s) in the proposed field of research.

SCORE Research Continuance Award (SC3)
PAR-20-041
The SC3 mechanism is for investigators who’ve been engaged in academic research and have published papers, and who seek to continue to conduct competitive research of limited scope to increase their research productivity and publications and eventually transition to non-SCORE support.

First application deadline: January 25, 2020
Earliest start date: January 2021

For all SCORE programs, the applicant institution must award science degrees to undergraduate (B.S. or B.A.) and/or graduate (M.S. or Ph.D.) students and have received less than $6 million per year from R01 support (total costs) in each of the last 2 fiscal years.
