Biographical Sketch: Federico Bernal, Ph.D.

Federico Bernal, Ph.D., is acting chief of the Research Advancement Programs branch and a program director in the Division for Research Capacity Building. Bernal oversees the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE)​ Phase 1 program​. He also manages grants for the COBRE, IDeA Clinical and Translational Research Network (CTRN​, formerly IDeA-CTR), and Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) programs.

Prior to joining NIGMS, Bernal was a principal investigator and section head in the intramural program of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Md. Bernal received B.S. degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Bernal then conducted postdoctoral research in chemical biology at Harvard University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
