NIGMS Interim Support for New Investigators

A feature of the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA, R35) is the increased stability that this mechanism offers. NIGMS expects its funding decisions on MIRA renewals to be more flexible than the all-or-none approach typical of the R01 mechanism.

For renewal applications of Established Investigator MIRAs that are judged to be meritorious but not commensurate with the level of funding provided during the previous MIRA budget period, some applicants may receive a renewal award at a reduced level of support or, in rare cases, may be considered for a modest level of supplemental funding for a short period of time to allow them to submit an R01 or a revised MIRA application.

For renewal applications of Early Stage Investigator MIRAs that are judged to be meritorious but not commensurate with the level of funding provided during the previous MIRA budget period, some applicants may be considered for a modest level of supplemental funding for a short period of time to allow them to submit an R01 or a revised MIRA application.

Interim support for MIRAs is not guaranteed. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis and will depend on the strength of a separate administrative supplement request, availability of funds and Institute priorities.

Interim support for R01s and other non-MIRA grant mechanisms will only be provided in rare and extremely well-justified situations, based on administrative supplement requests.
