IDeA Support Attribution Instructions

It is important to acknowledge NIH funding in all publications, including research articles, press releases, and other documents about NIH-supported research. When communicating support from the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program, please use the following guidelines:

  • For announcements, acknowledge the IDeA program, not just the INBRE, COBRE, or subprogram and provide context about the program's goals. For example: ‘The University of _________ has received $ _________ from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. The IDeA program builds research capacity in states where levels of NIH research funding have historically been low by supporting basic, clinical, and translational research, faculty development, and infrastructure improvements.’
  • For journal articles, oral or poster presentations, news releases, news and feature articles, interviews with reporters, and other communications, acknowledge the IDeA program's full or partial support of your research.
  • To acknowledge research support in scientific publications, use the following format: ‘Research reported in this publication was supported by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under award number P20GM123456.’
    • IDeA-related publications are also expected to conform to the Citation Instructions provided to PIs in the Annual Reporting Guidance document.
  • If you wish to acknowledge NIH/NIGMS funding on your website or other communication product, you may use one of the following options:
    • ‘Funded by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institutes of Health.’
    • ‘Funded by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.’
  • Do not use the NIH or NIGMS logo to acknowledge funding, these logos are only to be used for material produced by NIH or its components.
  • Alert the director of the NIGMS Division for Research Capacity Building, which oversees the IDeA program, and the NIGMS Communications and Public Liaison Branch if your institution is planning a news release, or if there are other ways we can help you promote IDeA-supported activities.
