NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program Symposium
The NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) provides Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional Predoctoral Training Grant (T32) awards to eligible domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-informed approaches to integrated dual-degree training leading to the award of both a clinical degree, e.g., M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.D.S., Pharm.D., and research doctorate degree (Ph.D.). With the dual qualification of rigorous scientific research and clinical practice, graduates are equipped with the skills to develop research programs that accelerate the translation of research advances to the understanding, detection, treatment and prevention of human disease, and to lead the advancement of biomedical research. Areas of particular importance to NIGMS are the iterative optimization of MSTP training efficacy and efficiency, fostering the persistence of MSTP alumni in research careers, and enhancing the diversity of the clinician-scientist workforce. NIGMS expects that the proposed research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, mentoring and career development elements to prepare trainees for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation.
The MSTP currently has 50 participating programs and supports approximately 1000 trainees. A number of the MSTP supported programs include partnerships with nearby schools of arts and science or engineering, and non-degree granting research institutes.
All MSTP T32 training grant applications must be submitted under PAR-21-189. Further, all applications must be submitted as new applications, including those that were previously funded by NIGMS. Renewals are restricted to awards made in response to PAR-19-036.

Trainees appointed to an MSTP grant receive a stipend and tuition allowance as detailed in the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grant Funding Announcement. Many institutions supplement the basic stipend provided by the MSTP grant.
MSTP trainees must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Trainees incur no payback obligation. Individuals who wish to enter the MSTP should contact the program office at the participating institution(s) of their choice directly for curriculum information and admission requirements.
