Ruth Washington participated in the Maximizing Access to Research Careers students at Stillman College, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences in 1988. Washington continued her education at Wayne State University, earning a master's degree in immunology in 1990 and a Ph.D. in the biological sciences in 1995. She conducted postdoctoral research at the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Michigan. She is now the executive director for faculty and graduate student retention, inclusion and success at Kent State University in Ohio.
