José A. Torres-Ruiz was a 1982 graduate of the first Minority Access to Research Careers class at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in biology. He continued his studies at Washington State University, Pullman, where he earned a master's degree in 1985 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1987. He is now chair of the biochemistry department and director of graduate studies at the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico.
