Sandy Merino participated in the Minority Biomedical Research Support program at the University of New Mexico, where she earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1990. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in genetics from the university in 1996, followed by postdoctoral research at Indiana University, Bloomington. She is now a senior scientist at Novozymes, Inc., in Davis, Calif., where she is project leader for the Trichoderma Technology Group.
