Sam Díaz-Muñoz was a Minority Access to Research Careers undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2003. He completed his doctoral studies in animal behavior at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2010 and then pursued studies on microbial evolution at the University of California, San Diego. From 2014-2017, he studied virus evolution and genomics at the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at New York University, supported by an NIH Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (2016-2017). He is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of California, Davis.
