BioMath Program

NIGMS and the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) jointly support this program to address the pressing need to:

  • bring mathematics and statistics into the core of biological and biomedical research.
  • broaden the use of innovative mathematics in understanding life processes.

Applications are accepted once a year and reviewed by a joint NSF/NIGMS panel. For details see NSF Program Solicitation 22-600 and NIH Guide Notice NOT-GM-22-039. Please note that applications should be submitted to the NSF.

Purpose

  • Supports fundamental research in mathematics and statistics to address questions in biomedical sciences
  • Enhances collaboration between the mathematical science and the biomedical research communities

Program Contact

If you are planning to submit a proposal, we encourage you to contact the Management Team via email (DMS-NIGMS@nsf.gov) to discuss the suitability of your proposed project for the BioMath program. Email inquiries should include (i) the key personnel (PI, co-PI, and Senior Personnel) and their research expertise, and (ii) brief description (one-page limit) of the biological/biomedical application and the novelty of the proposed mathematical approach.
