Criteria for Assessing Clinical Trial Applications at NIGMS

For clinical studies or trials, staff routinely consider the following in advising a potential applicant:

  • Whether the scientific question being asked falls within an area of interest to NIGMS
  • Whether there is any overlap with the mission of other institutes and centers at NIH
  • Whether the trial initially appears likely to test the proposed scientific hypothesis
  • Whether the study/trial has the potential to make a significant impact upon the clinical field
  • Whether the proposed budget is consistent with NIGMS’ plans and practices for the fiscal year.

Applications are subject to the usual referral guidelines at NIH. NIGMS does not support pure outcomes research, and those inquiries will be referred elsewhere.
