Biographical Sketch: Catherine Lewis, Ph.D.

Catherine Lewis, Ph.D., is director of the Division of Cell Biology and Biophysics. In this capacity, she oversees the division’s basic research programs in structural biology, structural genomics, cell biology and biophysics. She has played significant roles in developing and managing programs in single-molecule biophysics, nanoscience and cellular imaging. Prior to joining NIGMS in 1989, Lewis was a staff fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, where she performed research on chromosome and chromatin structure and the regulation of gene expression. She earned a B.A. in psychology from Barnard College, Columbia University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Princeton University.
