IRACDA Supplemental Instructions for Form PHS 2590

(For Noncompeting Continuation Grant Applications)

General Information

The Non-Competing Continuation Grant Progress Report (PHS 2590) must be submitted 2 months before the beginning date of the next budget period using the PHS 2590. In addition to the PHS 2590 instructions, follow the specific instructions provided below for preparing a progress report for K-12 noncompeting continuation application.

Specific Instructions for K-12 Non-Competing Continuation Progress Report

Use Form PHS 2590 in preparing the progress report (forms and instructions are available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm) and complete the following forms:

  • Face Page (Form Page 1)
  • Budget Form Pages 2 and 3 (PHS 2590)
  • Progress Report Summary (Form Page 5)
  • All Personnel Report (all scholars eRA Commons user names should be included)
  • Checklist (Form Page 6).

The progress report must provide information on the implementation and outcome of the proposed career development program, any modifications to the program as originally proposed and details about the program outcome as requested in the Type 5 Progress Report Table [PDF, 162KB]. The following should be included in the annual progress report:

  • A narrative that describes the following:
    • The program objectives.
    • Professional training including course work, workshops, seminars and other activities associated with the program.
    • Overall program impact on partner institution(s) in terms of courses/curriculum, pedagogy, student research and career mentoring, and faculty research collaborations with RIIs.
    • Training in the responsible conduct of research.
    • Outcomes of the program evaluation.
    • Any changes made to the program as a result of the evaluation or for other reasons.

  • The Type 5 Progress Report Table [PDF, 162KB]. This table requests details on recruitment, appointments and career outcomes of scholars as well as information on impacts at MSIs. If relevant, additional explanation may be provided in the narrative.

  • Biographical sketches of new or replacement mentors.

  • Progress statements for each scholar briefly describing the ongoing research (including major research findings made this last year, conferences attended and presentations given), teaching experiences and specific plans and goals for the upcoming year.

  • Scholar-authored publications (include only peer-reviewed publications in journals; no abstracts) must be presented as the PDF publications report generated by My NCBI. Please note: Scholar-authored publications must be in compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy rules.

The narrative part is limited to up to five pages; numerical and other data (presented in tabular form), and scholar's publications report (PDF) generated by My NCBI are not counted in the five-page limit. Large tables and figures as well as the summary of annual evaluation report (do not send the entire report) should be included in the appendix.

Statement of Postdoctoral Scholars Appointment

The institution must submit a completed Statement of Appointment (PHS Form 2271) for each scholar appointed for 8 weeks or more (see NIH Guide Notice NOT-GM-11-104, issued on February 18, 2011). Grantees must submit the PHS 2271 data electronically using the xTrain system. The xTrain system is accessed via the eRA Commons. More information on xTrain and other instructional resources are available at: http://era.nih.gov/training_career/index.cfm.
