Ruth Washington was one of the first Minority Access to Research Careers students at Stillman College, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences in 1988. Washington continued her education at Wayne State University, earning a master's degree in immunology in 1990 and a Ph.D. in the biological sciences in 1995. She conducted postdoctoral research at the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Michigan. She is now an associate professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of Connecticut, where she also directs programs to train the next generation of minority scientists.
