Karen Singmaster was a Minority Access to Research Careers undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Chemistry in 1982. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1987 from the University of California, Berkeley. She performed postdoctoral research at IBM in San Jose. Singmaster is now a chemistry professor at San Jose State University, where she also directs the university's MORE-sponsored Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement program and NSF's Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program.
