Fatima Rivas participated in the Minority Access to Research Careers program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 2001. She went on to the University of California, San Diego, where she earned a master's degree in 2003 and a Ph.D. in 2006, both in organic chemistry. She conducted postdoctoral research as an Institutional Research Academic Career Development Award fellow at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, and taught at San Diego State University. She is now a Research Associate at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
