Arlie O. Petters participated in both the Minority Access to Research Careers and Minority Biomedical Research Support programs as an undergraduate student at the City University of New York, Hunter College, where he graduated with a combined bachelor's-master's degree in mathematics in 1986. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991, and is now a professor of mathematics, physics, and business administration at Duke University. In 2005, Petters founded the Petters Research Institute in his native country, Belize.
