National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)

NIH has received new funds for Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), Pub L. No. 111-5. Among the NIH initiatives related to the Recovery Act is a new program, Supporting New Faculty Recruitment to Enhance Research Resources through Biomedical Research Core Centers.

This new program invites applications from U.S. academic institutions/organizations to support hiring and start-up packages for newly recruited faculty who will develop research projects within the context of Biomedical Research Core Centers.

NIGMS will consider applications from academic institutions to hire faculty whose research is related to the NIGMS mission. Applications should specify the department(s) or center(s) in which the hiring efforts will be focused. We will give highest priority to applications from institutions that provide evidence that the award will support the resumption of a pre-existing search that was suspended due to economic factors.

Budget and Project Period

Budgets for direct costs of up to $250,000 per year and project duration of up to two years may be requested.

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards

NIGMS expects to make up to 20 awards in Fiscal Year 2009, with total funding of approximately $10 million over the two-year period of Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010.

Other Information

We expect institutions to conduct open searches and seek faculty applications from women, members of racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research, individuals with disabilities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This aspect of the proposed faculty recruitment strategy will be considered in funding decisions. Applications should describe plans for outreach and recruitment, as well as the recruitment process (e.g., the number of applications received, demographics of the applicant pool, interviews scheduled, etc.).

We will give highest priority to applications confirming an institutional commitment to provide two or more additional years of support after the end of the award.

In addition, we will consider the geographic distribution of funds as well as institutional needs and other characteristics.

The receipt date for letters of intent is April 29, 2009. Send letters of intent to Paul Sheehy at sheehyp@nigms.nih.gov.

The application due date is May 29, 2009.
