Halloween
Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is shortened from All-hallows-eve, and is the eve of “All Hallow's Day” which is now also known as “All Saints Day”. It comes from the Celtic culture and dates back about 2 thousand years. Pope Gregory IV standardized the date of All Saints' Day, or All Hallows' Day, to be November 1, in the name of the entire Western Church in 835.
In modern times, on October 31, children wear Halloween costumes and walk the streets knocking on neighbors' doors and trick-or-treating. It is customary to put carved pumpkins (jack-o-lanterns) in the windows to protect houses from ghosts and spirits, and also just for fun.
