Biographical Sketch: John Whitmarsh, Ph.D.

John Whitmarsh, Ph.D., is a special assistant to the NIGMS director. His responsibilities include promoting the infrastructure, tools and computational models needed to accelerate biomedical research, and advancing education and training programs aimed at developing a diverse and effective biomedical workforce. Prior to joining NIGMS, Whitmarsh was a professor in the department of biochemistry and director of the center for biophysics and computational biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University and conducted postdoctoral research at Purdue University and the Center for Nuclear Studies in Gif-sur-Yvette, France.
