Dr. Taylor is a program director in the NIGMS Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity. He oversees the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program, a program aimed at fostering basic, translational and clinical biomedical research at institutions in states where NIH funding has historically been low.
Dr. Taylor came to NIGMS in 2011 from the NIH’s former National Center for Research Resources, where he helped guide the growth of the IDeA program from its modest beginnings to one of the largest federally funded programs of its kind.
Dr. Taylor’s research experience lies in the area of cardiovascular physiology. Prior to coming to NIH in 1998, he directed the Hyperbaric Environmental Adaptation program at the Naval Medical Research Institute, part of the Department of Defense. There, he investigated pharmacological, dietary and training interventions for improving the performance of Navy SEALs and deep saturation divers under extreme conditions, such as hyperbaric (high atmospheric pressure) and cold-water environments.
