Amy Swain, Ph.D., is acting director of the Division of Biomedical Technology, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology, where she manages a portfolio of awards in the areas of technology for structural biology and informatics. She is also a key contact for NIH synchrotron activities. Prior to joining NIGMS, Swain served as acting director of the NIH’s former National Center for Research Resources. Before coming to NIH in 1999, she was a principal scientist at Hoffman-La Roche, Inc., where she worked in the area of structure-based drug design. Swain earned a B.S. in biology from Frostburg State University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of South Carolina. She performed postdoctoral research in the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory at the National Cancer Institute.
