Dr. Swain is a program director in the NIGMS Division of Biomedical Technology, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology. In addition to leading the division, she manages a portfolio of grants in the areas of technology for structural biology and informatics. She is also a key contact for NIH synchrotron activities.
Swain came to NIGMS in 2011 from the NIH’s former National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), where she managed a structural biology technology portfolio and coordinated the NCRR small business grant program until 2010. She then served as acting director of the NCRR Division of Biomedical Technology, following a year as deputy director of the division. Before coming to NIH in 1999, Swain was a principal scientist at Hoffman-La Roche, Inc., where she worked in the area of structure-based drug design.
Swain’s background lies primarily in macromolecular crystallography. She performed postdoctoral research in the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory at the National Cancer Institute. She earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of South Carolina and a B.S. in biology from Frostburg State University.
