Biographical Sketch: Irene Eckstrand, Ph.D.

Irene Eckstrand, Ph.D., is a program director in the Division of Genetics and Developmental Biology, where she manages research grants in population genetics and evolutionary biology. She also serves as the scientific officer for the Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) program and the Modeling the Scientific Workforce program. Prior to joining NIGMS, Eckstrand was a lecturer and research associate at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a B.A. in biology from Earlham College and a Ph.D. in biology from Wright State University. Eckstrand conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2014, she was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
